Privacy Policy

Overview

Prelude teaches dating-app conversation skills through short lessons with AI coaches, and coaches you on your real chats and your own dating profile. Your privacy matters to us. This policy explains what data we collect, who processes it, and how you can control it.

Data We Collect

• Account information - We use anonymous authentication to identify your account. No email address or personal login is required.
• Profile information - The first name, gender, preferences and other details you give during onboarding, used to personalize lessons.
• Lesson answers and progress - The messages you write in lesson writing steps, your scores, your best lines, and your lesson and chapter progress.
• Coach tab sessions - When you ask for help with a real chat or a profile review, we keep a history of the session: the chat text you pasted (or the conversation the coach read from your screenshots), your question, your profile text, the coach's read, and the replies you wrote with their scores. We never keep the screenshots or photos themselves.
• Screenshots and photos you add on the Coach tab - Stored only temporarily (see below) so the coach can read them.
• Your AI consent choice - Whether you agreed to AI processing, and when.
• Feedback - Anything you send through the in-app feedback form.
• Subscription status - Which Prelude Premium subscription you have (if any) and when it renews or ends, as reported by Apple or Google. We never see your payment details.
• Device and app information - Your device model, operating system and app version, time zone and language, and a notification token. We use these to run the app and fix problems.
• Usage records - Which screens you open and what you tap in the app, linked to your anonymous account, so we can find bugs and see where the app is confusing. They can include what was on screen at that moment, such as an answer you typed in a lesson. Passwords and email addresses are never recorded. These records are deleted automatically after 30 days.

Data We Do NOT Collect

• Location data
• Contacts
• Your photo library (only the pictures you choose to add on the Coach tab)
• Browsing history
• Advertising identifiers

How We Use Your Data

• To grade what you write in lessons and give you feedback
• To coach you on your real chats and review your profile
• To show your progress, best lines and coaching history
• To unlock Prelude Premium when you subscribe
• To find bugs and improve the app (usage records and device information)

AI Processing (OpenAI)

Prelude's coaching runs on AI from OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Before anything is sent, the app asks for your permission, and you can turn it off at any time in Settings under "AI coaching and your data". Without your permission nothing is sent; the lesson steps that don't grade your writing keep working.

With your permission, we send OpenAI:

• Lesson writing - the messages you write in lesson writing steps, together with your first name, so the coach can grade them.
• Real-chat coaching - the chat text you paste, the chat screenshots you add, and your question.
• Profile reviews - your profile text (bio and prompt answers) and the profile photos you add.
• Your replies - the messages you write on the Coach tab, so the coach can grade them.

Chats, screenshots and profiles can include the other person's messages, name and photos. Please only share what you're comfortable sharing.

OpenAI processes this data to generate your feedback. Under OpenAI's API terms, data sent through its API is not used to train its models. See OpenAI's policies.

Screenshots and Photos

Screenshots and photos you add on the Coach tab are uploaded to temporary storage (Google Firebase Storage) in a folder only your account can access. They are deleted right after the coach has read them, whether or not the read succeeded, and when you remove a picture or leave the screen. As a backstop, anything left behind (for example if the app is closed mid-upload) is deleted automatically after one day. We never keep the images; only the text of the coach's read is saved in your history.

Third-Party Services

• OpenAI - AI grading and coaching, as described above. Subject to OpenAI's Privacy Policy.
• Firebase Authentication and Storage (Google) - Anonymous sign-in, and temporary storage of Coach tab screenshots and photos. Subject to Google's Privacy Policy.
• MongoDB Atlas - Hosts our database (your profile, progress and coaching history).
• Apple/Google In-App Purchases - Subscription billing is handled entirely by Apple or Google. We do not see your payment details.

Data Sharing

We never sell your personal data, and we do not share it with third parties for marketing or advertising. Data is shared with OpenAI only with your permission and only to generate your feedback, as described above.

Data Storage & Security

Your data is stored on secure servers and is associated with your anonymous account; it is not accessible to other users. Communication between the app and our servers is encrypted via HTTPS.

Data Deletion

In the app: open the Settings tab and reset your account. This immediately and permanently deletes your profile, lesson answers and progress, best lines, AI consent choice, and your Coach tab history (including the saved chat text, the coach's reads and your replies) from our servers. You can also turn off AI processing at any time in Settings.

By email: if you no longer have the app, email roderiklagerweij@gmail.com with the subject "Prelude data deletion". We delete all the data above, plus any feedback you sent, within 30 days.

What is kept: usage records expire on their own within 30 days. A minimal record that your anonymous account opened the app and whether it subscribed is kept for our business statistics; it contains no profile, lesson or coaching content. Your subscription itself is managed by Apple or Google; deleting your data does not cancel it, so cancel it in your App Store or Google Play settings.

Children's Privacy

Prelude is not directed at children under 17. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Significant changes will be communicated through the app.
